Dave’s Music Discovery #12
“You Thought” — Teezo Touchdown, Janelle Monae
First, they’re sour then they’re sweet. The second half sounds like a bonfire lament.
“Book of Slim” — Gene Harris & The Three Sounds
Cinematically soulful. Put this under George Clooney explaining how they’re going to rob the bank.
“Just Sayin Shit” — Flower in Bloom
Short & sweet like the last drop of syrup in the bottle.
“TBH!” — Ovrkast
Poignant & melancholic. Real sad boi hours. Contemplative raps about self-worth & maintaining sanity regardless of the surroundings.
“For James” — Pale Jay
As cozy as an ugly sweater. Sounds like peppermint tea. Like smelling a memory.
“Coretta” — Zay Lewis
Muddy & determined. Zay has on ankle weights drudging through quicksand.
“Sleazy remix” — Ke$ha, Andre 3000
I’m never not impressed by an Andre verse, no matter how old it is.
“Heartbreak Anonymous” — WIL$ON
A classic sample coupled with familiar raps about longing after an ex. I always loved “I’m better without you but baby please come back” raps.
“Thru My Hair” — ¿Téo?
Fresh out the shower, feet in the sand music. Loverboy music. A cold bucket of water to the face.
“Fivethirty” — Jden Ray
Sounds like a long voicemail. Regret relationship raps hold a special place in my heart. Brisk & tempered.
“Le Monde” — Richard Carter
Yeah, this song left an impression. Edith’s high-pitched vocals echo across the ear like an apparition. The additional instrumentation acts as scaffolding to the original.
“Heat Check” — Earl Sweatshirt, The Alchemist
The instrumental sounds like end credits music; making Earl’s gluey verse akin to a drunken director’s commentary.
