Dave’s Music Discovery #4
Ocean Prime — The Alchemist, Boldy James
Man, this shit is perfect. BoldyMist is becoming my favorite duo. All of the ocean wordplay is picturesque and vivid. What King Triton would listen to while getting massaged.
OG! — JPEGMAFIA
I’ve never been a Peggy fan but this song gave me FOMO.
Me’s Company — CZARFACE
As an only child, this song speaks to me on a personal level. Being your own support system is sometimes the best thing you can do to avoid pitfalls.
Barz Simpson — Sonnyjim, The Purist, MF DOOM, Jay Electronica
Murky and wet. Sounds like Gotham City. Hearing DOOM’s apparition float on a track is always a blessing. ‘Most precious things in life you cant bring back’.
Have It All — Gucci Mane, Pharrell
I bet this had H&M in a frenzy. Gucci is one of the most romantic writers of our time and this song is a layup.
Truth Be Told — grouptherapy, SWIM, TJOnline, Jadagrace
Vulnerable and teetering. Going through a 3 act structure, this song serves as space for experimentation and expression.
Fish Maan — Hotel Ugly
Genuinely becoming a big fan of this guy. I love a sad song you can just drunkenly two-step to. 5:30 pm Malibu music for sure.
FAMJAM4000 — Jordan Ward
A cute song about falling back in love after living life away from each other. Sometimes we forget to love the folks who really deserve it.
Girlfriend — Hemlocke Springs
A fucking bop. Aside from the nostalgia the music gives, I love that Hemlocke is black. That may seem trivial but this specific sound is usually attributed to a certain race and it's always nice to be surprised.
Changes — Joy Oladokun
A sweeping powerhouse. A sobering yet hopeful song about maintaining a sense of self while everything changes around you.
GS1 — CONNIE, Zelooperz
This song sounds like trying to solve a Rubix cube in an oven.
Fool For You — Cee Lo Green, Phillip Bailey
Have you ever fallen head over heels for someone? Then listen to this song. There’s a reason why it won 2 Grammys.
Another Dose — Gamblers, Mick Jenkins
Mick really skates over this roller rink anthem. I need to hear this outside.
We’re All Gonna Be Killed — Terrell Hines
If Mr. Rogers was a Black radical, this would be the outro for his tv show.
