Dave’s Music Discovery #5
“Jay’s Reprise” — Ambre, Jay Electronica
This shit makes me float. Jay is from the future.
“The Ring” — Ev Bird, Boldy James
A beachy song about a guy who watched the video from The Ring coupled with a buttery verse from Boldy
“Angels” — DOOMSTARKS
A wonderfully dark retelling of Charlie’s Angels; DOOM raps in cursive.
“Godspeed” — Shayhan
I love this guy's voice: candlewax textures and purple hues. A dreamy reflection of lovers lost and found.
“Graphic Bleeds Out” — Chris keys, Quelle Chris, Merrill Garbus, Melanie St. Charles
Sometimes it’s not the knife that hurts, but the person holding it. Some keep their feelings guarded because the pain of loss is unbearable.
“Cacoon” — 070 Shake
Hazy, heavy, and rising. I could hear this playing during the lightcycle scene in the new Tron movie.
“6 Five Heartbeats” — The Alchemist, Vince Staples
Vince is really one of our best melancholic storytellers; his wisdom marbles his pain.
“THE LOOP” — Marlon Craft
A great time capsule about attempting to break yourself out of life’s mundanity while trying to hold yourself accountable
“Holorgam” — Forest Claudette
An enveloping confession about the numbness that comes from finding yourself.
“Farewell Party” — Hi Fi Set
A dream. Sounds like so many nostalgic references that it just brings a smile to my face. A happy skip through the flower field; audio springtime.
“One Shot” — Navy
Sounds like sailing toward your future. Navy’s flow surfs up and down the track’s wavy curves.
“Rumble” — Skirllex, Fred again…, Flowdan
You’re stuck inside the eye of the storm for this one. Feels like a moshpit in pitch blackness.
“Number One Candidate” — AntsLive
The music video was suggested to me on YT and it's been in my head ever since. Always a sucker for horns, this track is boisterous and triumphant; Prince Ali’s introduction.
