“Welcome to the DCC”Nothing But Thieves

Sounds like an After Hours demo. A thumping dancefloor anthem that glorifies stardom and living your biggest dreams. Coke laced with stardust.

“Front Desk”Hotel Ugly

The intro to the highly anticipated debut from Ugly doesn't disappoint. Crooning about a love that could've been; the song drifts back and forth — a ghost peeking through curtains.

“Freehold”Navy Blue

Navy navigates his thoughts and circumstances to find the man on the other side. The growth is felt and the need to push past melancholia to reach contentment is a picture painted vividly.

“Why Bother” Butch Dawson, Pink Siifu

This is gumbo with a dark roux. Sounds like the Second Line in the rain. Butch’s flow is wave cap smooth. Siifu sounds like Rambo in the jungle.

“Uncomfortable”Katori Walker

Vulnerability raps. A look into Katori’s insecurities hits home but the song is overall about the feeling of overcoming self-doubt; removing the mask for others and yourself.

“Enough”Rory, reggie, Jay Electronica

Loving your woman is doing more than loving your woman. Jay Elect delivers another arresting verse from the POV of a hurt man’s ego.

“Dumbest Girl Alive”100 gecs

Huge missed opportunity if M3ghan isn’t killing someone to this song in the sequel.

“Shadowboxing” Domo Genesis

One of the best rappers from OF is back with a free-form rap that sounds like a threatning conversation whispered at the back of a church.

“WOOD GRAIN” JoshSimmons

BBQ in the park music. Smoking piff riding down PCH. I can’t help but bounce when this comes on.

“Fentanyl Tester”JPEGMAFIA, Danny Brown

An arcade fire. The Lennox Mall in a tornado. A link up at the end of the world.

“Wait on You”Jay Worthy, Leven Kali, Na-Kel Smith

Put this on for shorty on some player shit.

“What a Day”Tyler, the Creator

Some of his best rapping, period. Tyler excels at separating himself from his contemporaries and at times, his elders. I’ve always said that Tyler was a better producer than a writer but here, he’s cemented himself as a master of both.
